Location: Copperas Cove Public Library (CCPL)

Number of attendees: 8

Awesome group of makers: Educator, Students, Programmer, Doctor, Modeler, Photographer, and more

Topics of conversation:

  • 3D Printer:

Copperas Cove Public Library has available computers for designing 3D Models and a 3D printer for printing your design. has very good tutorials for learning to design 3D models and it’s an excellent site to explore existing 3D models which are available to download and 3D print.

3D cookie cutters from   Do a search for cookie cutters to find an array of models from animals, cars to your favorite characters. Download the STL file and print them at the library’s teamwork room.  Pretty cool. Several cookie cutters were printed for the Maker Club Workshop.  More on the workshop to below.

  • Drones:

Learning about Drones

Dan and Ron brought in a selection of drones to play with. Here we see Library Director Kevin Marsh inspect the changes that Ron made to a mini drone. Drones teach you a bunch of different things: programming, mechanics, flight behavior, remote control, imaging, and a ton more.

  • Flight Simulator:

Flight Simulator

Flight Simulator

Dan and Trae work on getting the flight simulator software running, while Ron inspects Kevin’s 3D print of a Copperas Cove Library drink coaster. Flight simulators are great ways to practice the behavior of drones without having to worry about breaking things.

Flight Simulator Controller

Here’s Gianni working the drone flight simulator. You use a “real life” remote when controlling the simulator — this makes it more realistic. It’s the same technique used by pilots when learning a new aircraft.

  • Retro Tech:

Retro Tech

Dan brought in two Retro pieces of tech. A TRS-80 model 100 (right), along with a “newer” laptop. You can tell that the laptop is newer because it uses those fancy 3.5 discs! Both of these machines have less processing power than the toy drones we were playing with!

  • Sneak Preview: Making Circuits With Dough:

The Maker Club will be hosting a free Making Circuits workshop. Participants will design their own electronic circuits using conductive dough. Learn to light up LEDs, make Buzzers sound, and more. Once you know the basics, you can start building your own creative designs. This is an all ages event and a great chance for parents to partake with their younger children.

Learn about the workshop we’ll be having on Saturday February 11, 2017 from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Copperas Cove Public Library.

A Note:

A great start to the new year of making, learning and exploring, let’s keep the momentum with more creative and interesting projects.  Please feel free to share your experiences with family and friends.  Everyone is welcome.  If you enjoy making and creating, join us.

Next club meeting will be Wednesday, March 8th, 2017, at 6pm at the Copperas Cove Public Library. Bring your project for the Show & Tell segment.
